The Magical World of Puppets
THEATRICAL GROUP CREATES PROJECT AND BRINGS ART AND FUN TO SCHOOLS IN THE POTIGUAR CAPITAL
By Daniele Pacheco | Culture Editor
“Moral values and cross-cutting themes are worked on in all shows, which help in character formation, bringing strong foundations to a child’s life,” explains actor Estevão Oliveira. The theater company that works with children’s imagination by bringing puppets to life has already crossed borders and ended up in South Africa.
The Theater Co. “Grandpa’s Magical World,” which originated in Rio Grande do Sul seven years ago, continues on tour with a team of eight members. This Tuesday, the 19th, the group that has already enchanted more than a million children will perform in Ponta Negra at the Espaço Educação School. There, they will show students a spectacle with diverse artistic techniques, featuring folding, rod, and direct manipulation puppets, rescuing culture and bringing education and lots of fun.
Highly educational and motivating for the imagination, puppets help in children’s development by stimulating their creativity, reasoning, and artistic gifts. “Grandpa’s Magical World” operates throughout Brazil, presenting shows on television, in city halls, theaters, and schools with the aim of assisting in the character formation of this audience that is still developing.
According to Kim Bergsagel of the Edinburgh Puppet Theatre, “The art of puppetry combines many art forms that teach us to think laterally and creatively—drawing, painting, sculpture, design, theater—all of which can help a child find a way to express their own ideas and communicate with others.”
The presentation is part of the group’s existing but little-known project “The Theater goes to School,” which brings several benefits to both the school management team and parents. It aims to democratize art and offers children their first contact with the theater world.
Puppet theater or marionette theater is the theatrical expression that characterizes performances staged with hand puppets, marionettes, or dolls. It is even more authentic when its elements—stage, sets, curtains, among others—are strictly created for a specific performance.
One of the biggest differentiators of this theatrical group is the clown show coupled with the puppet theater, which stimulates the children’s participation and interactivity with the puppets.
“The use of several puppet techniques on stage in the same show, some being giant (human-sized), makes the show richly cultural and diversified,” highlights Estevão Oliveira when describing the spectacle. The show can have 15 to 20 puppets on stage depending on the children’s interaction, lasting an hour and a half of pure play and music.
The puppeteers from Rio Grande do Sul are responsible for the production and creation of the characters. They bring a manipulation show that gives life to the puppets, especially a clown with fun games that makes the constant interaction of the children with the puppets and story the strong point of the presentation.
“We work with playfulness, awakening the imagination in a way that not only children but also adults enter the charm of this art, because after all, everyone has a little bit of a child inside them,” emphasizes the actor.
The chosen themes are based on important cross-cutting subjects, literature classics, and fables, which according to Estevão Oliveira offer pedagogical support to the school’s management team and parents.
In reality, the stories told by the troupe are mostly original, adapted from Brazilian folklore, or from books by partner publishers. Age, thematic, and school classifications are just suggestions. In addition to these stories, they tell others outside their catalog or adapt them according to the needs of the institutions or schools.
“We are always creating ideas to meet specific needs through studies that allow us to deepen and innovate in artistic techniques for puppets, theater, etc.,” explains the actor, who summarizes the show as: “Fun, productive, unforgettable! A true journey into the enchanting world of puppets.”
